Terms and conditions


Mid-Norway Sailing School AS is a RYA Training centre providing RYA Practical and Shorebased training from their base in Trondheim, Norway.

Booking: Bookings through our web, by telephone or e-mail. Full payment is required to confirm a booking made within 42 days of the course or 25% deposit for bookings made more than 42 days before the course begins. Telephone and e-mail bookings will be held for 3 days. The booking will be confirmed on receipt of full payment or deposit and completed registration form. This will indicate that our terms and conditions have been accepted. The deposit is non-refundable once the booking is accepted. All bookings will be confirmed in writing by the issue of your booking confirmation and joining instructions. The balance of fees must be paid 42 days prior to the course commencement date. If the balance of fees is not received 42 days before the course commencement date, Mid-Norway Sailing School AS reserves the right to cancel the booking and offer it for resale – final reminders will not be sent and the client remains liable for the balance of fees.

Registration Form: Registration Forms must be completed for all courses and cruises to comply with RYA requirements and to assist us to attend to any special needs. Should you fail to complete a registration form after being requested to do so, we will assume that you agree to any terms and conditions and accept that we will be unable to attend to any special requirements or tailor the course to your experience.

When you complete the Registration Form, we will ask you for various types of information:

Contact details – we will use these to confirm your booking and send essential information about your course.

On successful completion of your Day Skipper or Coastal Skipper course your name, contact details, date of birth, certificate number and date of issue will be shared with the RYA through a secure web portal on www.rya.org.uk. The data will be stored on the RYA’s central database. This information allows the RYA to record your qualification, to update any records they may hold for you, and to verify or replace your certificate if required. On successful completion of all other courses, your name, certificate number and date of issue will be stored for up to 7 years. This information allows us to verify or replace your certificate if required.

Student Records –  MNSS will keep a record of your training to include name, contact details, certificate number, date and outcome of course, instructor, ports visited and mileage. If you do not wish you details to be stored, then you may request that they are deleted. However, neither the centre nor the RYA will be able to replace or verify your certificate in the future should you request this.

We will keep this information on file in order to help you in the future should you need it. This could be that you need a replacement certificate or advice about continuing you training. You may request that we delete your contact details at any time.

Feedback: We will also write to you to ask for your feedback. This is a RYA requirement, but it also helps us to respond to you after the course if necessary and to improve our service for others. We may share your feedback with your instructor and the rest of the team. Generally, this is a great way of passing on praise where it is due but sometimes things are not so positive. In these instances, we are sensitive to how this information is shared and of course you can always leave your feedback anonymously. The RYA may contact students when necessary for quality assurance of RYA training and for example in the investigation of a complaint or incident. In these instances, the information is used solely for the requested purpose and is not entered on to the RYA central database

We use secure providers to collect feedback and you will receive a personal e-mail request after your course.

Special Requirements: You will be given the opportunity to tell us about any special requirements you may have. This could be because of a medical condition, mobility issues or educational special needs. You can tell us about these when you make your booking in which case, they will be kept together with your contact details. You will also have the choice to give us this information when you arrive whereby it will be destroyed when you complete the course. It does help us to have advance notice of your needs when we are planning your training.

Payment: In order to keep course costs down we have the following options for making payments. Payments for course fees can be made by bank transfer, credit card or debit card.  We are unable to accept cheques or cash paid into our bank account. Should cash be paid, a charge will be made to cover bank charges.

Cancellation: A cancellation must be made in writing (email is acceptable) and is deemed to take effect on receipt. Cancellation less than 42 days prior to the course commencement date will result in forfeiture of all fees paid or due however we will do our best to try to re-sell the place and if successful the client will only forfeit the deposit. Cancellation more than 42 days prior to the course commencement date will only forfeit the deposit or 25% of the course fee if full payment has been made. It is therefore strongly recommended that you take out travel insurance which will cover you should you need to cancel your booking. If a client leaves a yacht and / or abandons a course before the scheduled termination date and time for whatever reason, no refunds will be given and additional travel costs or other expenses incurred will not be reimbursed.

Cancellation by MNSS: If MNSS has to cancel because of circumstances beyond its control including sickness, accidents, travel delays, weather, strikes, war or civil disturbance, then alternative dates will be offered or a full refund of course fees already paid will be made. No liability will be accepted by MNSS for incidental expenses incurred – we recommend that your travel insurance covers holiday cancellation. In the event of the yacht being unable to return to port, or any other agreed final destination, on time, due to weather, engine breakdown or any other circumstances, clients may elect to stay with the yacht at no extra charge, or make their own arrangements to return at their own expense. In the event of the insufficient numbers to enable the course to run we will offer alternative dates or a full refund of course fees only.

Pre-Course Requirements: by accepting these terms and conditions it is agreed that the suggested pre course requirements have been read and understood. We do not accept liability for anyone attending a course without adequate preparation. If in any doubt, please contact us.

Itinerary: We reserve the right to alter a proposed itinerary based on weather and sea conditions and strength of the crew. The safety and well being of the yacht and crew is paramount and will be the first consideration when passage planning. No refund will be given if an itinerary is changed.

Insurance: The Yachts provided by MNSS conform to the Department of Transport’s Code of Practice for Small Commercial Vessels. They are fully insured against accident, third party liability and personal injury arising from negligence by MNSS. However, MNSS accepts no liability for personal accident or loss or damage to the property of the client. Students are advised to take out the appropriate holiday insurance to cover these eventualities and cancellation charges.

Skipper’s Authority: Decisions made by the Skipper / Instructor are final in respect of the safety of the vessel, well-being of the crew and progress of the course; even to the extent of requiring a student to leave the vessel in exceptional circumstances. In the event of any complaint’s matters should bought to the attention of the skipper at the earliest opportunity. If the skipper cannot resolve the issue the complaint should be passed to the Principal of the school and if he is unable to resolve the matter it should be forwarded to the RYA.

Time at Sea: Every effort will be made to give students as much time at sea as possible however, if in the Skipper’s opinion weather conditions, safety or any other consideration renders it imprudent, the Skipper’s decision is final.

 Should a vessel become unseaworthy or any reason whatsoever, the School will inform the Student immediately. Every attempt will be made to enable the course to continue including allocating another vessel if available. No liability shall attach itself to the School beyond the refund of the full fee paid by the student(s) or unused portions thereof.

Breakages, Losses and Damage: All breakages, losses and damage caused must be immediately notified to the Skipper or Principal for safety reasons. Students shall be liable for any loss or damage to School’s equipment up to NOK 1000 per item. Where a student is deemed negligent liability will be to the full value of the item.

Cleaning: Students are respectfully asked to leave the boat as they found it. All crew members will be expected to take part in cleaning, cooking and any other duties required for the smooth running of the yacht including an end of course / cruise clean inside and out.

Exams: We will do our utmost to provide crew for Yachtmaster exams either from fellow candidates, the existing on-board crew or by making a request to our volunteer crew list. Should no crew be available we will not be held responsible.

Students taking an exam are expected to clean the boat once the examiner has left. Failure to do so will incur a cleaning charge of NOK 500 per person.

Certificates: All RYA courses follow the requisite syllabus and certificates will only be issued at the end of a course if, in the opinion of the School’s Instructors and Principal, the Student has reached the necessary standard. The School Principal’s decision shall be final and accepted by all Students.

Lost certificates: The RYA are now responsible for issuing lost certificates. Proof of the original qualification, such as a signed and stamped logbook or written confirmation from the instructor or training centre you successfully completed the course.

Please note the fee is £20 (free for RYA Gold and Life members).

Lost property: We have a vast amount of lost property on site, if anything is left behind, we will keep it for 2 weeks only. If, after 2 weeks it has not been claimed we donate items to charity shops as we simply do not have the space to store them. If your property is clearly named it will assist us in repatriation. If you would like your property returned, we request that you send us an appropriately sized postage paid box or envelope. We regret that we cannot be held responsible for the loss or damage to property left behind, not the loss or damage of items in transit back to their owner.

Please remember to check you have all your belongings when you leave.

Participation: Students will be expected to participate in all duties that are part of crewing a sailing yacht such as cooking, cleaning and routine maintenance as required by the Instructor. At the end of the course all Students will be expected to leave the vessel as found and will all play a part in cleaning, scrubbing decks and filling water tanks.

Students taking an exam are required to clean the boat once the examiner has left. Failure to do so will incur a cleaning charge of NOK 1000 which will be divided between all students on board.

Should a student miss parts of the course due to illness, sea sickness, lateness, use of mobile telephones, social media, skype, work or home based issues or any activities that interfere with teaching we will not be responsible for non-completion of the course or extend our Pass Promise guarantee.

Instruction in English: The RYA dictate that all RYA courses are taught in English. Should a student have difficulties as a result of their level of English we will not be able to significantly slow the pace of the course or extend our Pass Promise guarantee.

Special requirements: Please advise us of any special requirements on your booking form. We will do our best to accommodate any special requirements but will request that you bring foods for special diets. We cannot be held responsible of any special requirements not met but will do our utmost to assist if advised in writing at the time of booking.

Sea Time: Every attempt will be made to give pupils maximum sea time. However, if in the Skipper’s opinion weather conditions, safety or any other consideration renders it imprudent, the Skipper’s decision is final.

Disclaimer: No liability is accepted for any Student’s vehicles, possessions in the vehicle, on the pontoons or in the Schools vessels or accommodation.

No liability is accepted for Students whilst attending a course or activity or on marina property including pontoons or vessels. Students participate in any aspect of any course at their own risk.

Photographs: We may use photographs or moving images taken during courses or cruises for training, publicity and promotional purposes. If you would prefer that we did not photograph or film you, please let us know by email before the course starts and tell your Instructor at the beginning of the course
